Trimming lavender plants can be beneficial for their overall health and appearance. Cutting back lavender is recommended to promote new growth, prevent the plant from becoming leggy, and increase blooming. It’s usually best to prune lavender in the spring before new growth appears or after the plant has finished flowering in the summer. Be sure not to prune into old wood as lavender has difficulty regrowing from that point.

The type of lavender you have can also determine the best pruning approach. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) benefits from a more gentle pruning, while Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas) can tolerate a harder trim.

Consider your specific growing conditions when deciding to prune lavender. Lavender thrives in well-draining soil and full sun, so ensure your plant is in optimal conditions for growth before pruning. Always use clean, sharp tools to prevent any damage to the plant.

Properly timed and executed trimming can indeed lead to healthier, more vigorous lavender plants with increased blooming and a tidy appearance.
